What is Once a Month Cooking?

Once a Month Cooking, or OAMC, is a time saving, stress reducing method of making meals.  You cook one day out of every month and freeze your meals at the point where there is little to no work required, other than putting it in the oven!

Shoppshopping-listing Tips

  • Find out when your supermarket stocks fresh items and when they mark down items nearing their sale-by dates.  You can save a lot of money on something you’re going to freeze anyway!
  • Because you’ll be buying large quantities, it’s a great time to take advantage of coupons.  I’ll often pass on a coupon that requires me to buy three of something in order to get the fourth free, but in this case, I may need four anyway.
  • Often you can find great deals and save money just by being willing to do one extra step.  Those steps aren’t so annoying when you’re only doing them once instead of every night.  For instance, rather than buy pork chops, you can purchase a full pork loin and cut your own chops and roast.  It ends up costing half the price of pre-cut pork chops!

Cooking Tips

  • The trick here is organization.  You’ll want to do things in an order that will eliminate as many steps as possible.  Should you chop your twelve onions before browning your ground beef?  Yes!  Many recipes call for the beef to be browned with the onion.  Little things can make a big difference time-wise!
  • Recruiting a partner or having a friend work with you can be very beneficial (but certainly isn’t necessary.)  It just cuts down on the list of things to be done.  Check out OAMC Success for even more time-saving tips!

Freezing Tips

  • Decide whether your priority is saving money or saving time before you purchase your storage containers.  Ziplocs freezer bags are a good, affordable option that doesn’t require a big investment, but you have to transfer your meals to a baking dish.  Disposable aluminum pans or aluminum take-out boxes are the easiest to use and require little clean up.  If you don’t like disposables, Pyrex bakeware with lids works very well.
  • Label EVERYTHING!  I never thought I would forget what something was, but it’s very easy to do.  Invest in some labels or just write directly on your Ziplocs.
